Wokingham & Emmbrook lifted the The Martin Joyce Memorial Trophy with a convincing performance last Saturday at Binfield. A goal in either half was enough to see off the newly
promoted Hellenic League side in sweltering conditions. The visitors got off to the perfect start opening their account in only the 3rd minute with a wonder struck from midfielder
Jack Broome. Gaining possession in midfield, Broome broke forward before producing a great strike that flew over Callum Whitty's head from fully 35 yards out. From this point Wokingham ran the home side ragged looking dangerous when ever going forward. The pairing of Richard Bland and Luke Lee up front kept the home defence at full stretch throughout this entertaining encounter. James Wise who slotted in impressively into midfield picked out Bland who's shot on the turn was easily dealt with by Whitty. It wasn't until the 21st minute that Binfield had their first effort with Simon Teague firing high and wide. Bland then just failed to pick out Lee through the centre as the visitors continued to dominate.
An acrobatic effort from Andre Stairmand failed to worry Whitty. The home side won their first corner in the 30th minute. the first cross was headed for a second corner by Steve Tranter. From this delivery Wokingham keeper was forced to make a save by his post. Binfield had their best period of possession in the last 10 minutes of the half where Harris produced an excellent save to deny Carl Withers from 10 yards out. The half came to an end with Whitty keeping out a Wise effort with his foot.
Both sides made changes in the second have but Wokingham continued to look by far the better side. Bland shot inches over the bar from the visitors fist attack. Stairmand broke from his own half running fully 50 yards but his final pass was of poor quality. The visitors increased their lead in the 53rd minute when David Bellis released Richard Bland out on the left his sheer pace took him away from a challenge and cutting in kept his composure to slot past the advancing Whitty. Although Binfield had more possession than they had in the first half they failed to worry the composed Wokingham defence. On the hour Gary Sargeant got free but fired high and wide of the target. A good Bellis run from midfield saw him pick out Wise but his shot went wide. Harris again had to be alert on two occasions saving with his feet and then saving from Arron Wormsley. Both sides continued to make changes but none looked like changing the outcome. In the end Wokingham ran out well deserved and comfortable winners. This coming Saturday Wokingham are in league action when newly promoted Woodley Town are the visitors to Cantley Park.
