Wokingham and Emmbrook boss Wayne Wanklyn says the club’s Reading Senior Cup success last week was just rewards for a fine season from his players.

The Satsumas got their hands on the silverware following a 3-0 extra-time success against Woodley Town at the Madejski Stadium. It rounded off a fine campaign for the Cantley Park outfit who also finished fourth in Division One East of the Hellenic League.

Wanklyn said: “We’ve had a good season. The players have been fantastic, their attitude has been superb. They’ve deserved some silverware and it’s great for the club that we’ve got our hands on a trophy. We’ve finished fourth in the league and won the Reading Senior Cup. The next thing now is to kick on from here.”

Last Thursday’s game was a tight affair throughout the 90 minutes. Wanklyn added: “It was a good game. It was close, we shaded the first half and they probably had the better of the second. But we had the best chances, Stuart Harris only had to make one save. In extra-time we just blew them away, we were the better side and we deserved the win.”

Glenn Duggleby stuck with tradition after winning his first trophy as chairman of Wokingham & Emmbrook last night. The Hellenic Division One East outfit beat Woodley Town 3-0 in the final of the Reading Evening Post Senior Cup after extra time at Madejski Stadium.“It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant,” said a delighted Duggleby. “I woke up this morning with the trophy next to me in bed. I have to take any cup I win home with me.“It was our first final at the Madejski and first silverware for years. Our name, Wokingham Town, is on the trophy in 1961 and we have not won much since then.“We made sure they kept the bar open at the stadium as they were going to close it, and then we all went back to the clubhouse in Emmbrook.“It was a good night. I’ve not checked my wallet this morning but it definitely feels a lot lighter.”Duggleby admitted Woodley had the better chances during normal time to win the match, but that his young side “murdered them” in the extra period.“We were fitter and always the better footballing side,” he said. “They were going down with cramp and eventually we took advantage.“But they have done well this season and could have won it in the second half.”

Northwood 0 Wokingham & Emmbrook  2

The under 18's showed great bouncebackability to secure second place in the Allied Counties Premier Division last night (6/5) following their surprise defeat to Bisley last Friday, the young Satsumas went to Northwood needing just a point. However, they came away with all three thanks to goals from Shane Cooper-Clark (right) and Jack Ingram.

Congratulations to Roger, Dan and all the Allied squad.

Following last years success, the initial belief was that if the team could play to their potential they would have a good chance of consolidating their position in the Premier League and after an opening game draw against Bisley this seemed a reasonable assessment.

However from here on the team were galvanised and as they grew in confidence they began to show they were serious contenders for the title inflicting the League Winners Hayes & Yeading’s only defeat of the season .

To achieve Runners –Up is a fantastic achievement and even more satisfying is that the majority of the team have either come through the Youth system or are local lads supplemented by some excellent additions brought in by the management team. Also great credit to Roger & Dan for moulding the players and the time and energy they have put in over the season. As always success does not come without many people behind the scenes assisting so congratulations to all in involved.

Wokingham & Emmbrook  0,  Bisley Sports 1

Friday nights match at home to Bisley Sports (1/5) proved a game to far for our young Satsumas. For some of the lads it was their 4th game in 6 days! This showed, as they came up against a spirited Bisley side, looking for their first win of the season. Wokingham started well with Ollie Southward-Clark having an effort cleared off the line, and top scorer Shane Cooper-Clark seeing a couple of long range efforts go wide. The second period was a different affair with the home side looking jaded, both physically and mentally, and it was no surprise when the visitors took the lead midway through it. After the match manager Roger Herridge said " Without taking anything away from Bisley, it's been a hard week for a lot of these boys. Even I felt a little jaded on the sideline, so they must have been feeling out in the middle" The Satsumas still need a point to secure 2nd spot in the league, they have two games against Northwood, and one against Didcot Town. Roger continued "The belief is still in the squad, and after a few days rest I'm sure they'll pick themselves from this defeat"

    Wokingham & Emmbrook  2,  Henley Town 2

The young Satumas were once again held to a 2-2 draw with local rivals Henley Town last night, at Scours Lane. After a goalless first half, the vistors took the lead, heading home from the first corner in the second period. Wokingham drew level, with a fine piece of skill from front man Jack Ingram. The game ebbed and flowed with chances being created at both ends, before Henley once again took the lead with a well taken goal in the 70th minute. Wokingham then changed to a 4-4-2 system. These seemed to work as they enjoyed the best spell of the game, Dave Bellies going close with a long range effort, Ollie Southward-Clark's pace was effective down the right hand side and he carved two or three chances, before top scorer Shane Cooper-Clark (left) fired the leveler with ten minutes remaining.

Division One East

Ascot United’s run-in was given a boost with a 3-0 win over Kintbury Rangers.  A draw was likely but second half goals from Andy Lunn and Sam McIntyre with two settled it for Ascot.  Relegation candidates, Bisley Sports and Launton Sports were separated by Launton’s second half strike from Ryan Blake. Basement club Eton Wick suffered a 7-1 reverse to Holyport.  Ollie Doore was Wick’s scorer with a Jamie Handscomb hat-trick, an Arron Lennon pair and singles from Chris Woods and Lee Jerrum settling the result. High flyers, Henley Town and Wokingham & Emmbrook drew 1 -1. Richard Bland put the Satsuma’s into an early 2nd half lead but Riccardo Riccio rescued a point for Henley with a last gasp equaliser. Penn & Tylers Green lost to leaders, Binfield 2-0 with first half goals by Adam Crittendon. Relegation candidates Prestwood had a nightmare afternoon losing 12 - 1to Newbury. Jack Smillie opened the scoring for Newbury within six seconds, Kalief Madden hit a four-timer, an own goal, plus a Bob McLay hat-trick and goals from Paul Thomas, Mark James and Shaun Cook. Michael Louise hit a scorcher for Prestwood. Rayners Lane lost out to a 2nd half effort from Thame United’s Adam Rhodes and  South Kilburn took the points from Chinnor with goals from Lee Ives and a Dwayne Charles pair

Firstly I would like to apologise for the none activity on this site over the past week. This was due to me being away, and what a week to miss for the site, it started with the boys in orange scoring 11 goals in two games against South Kilburn (5) and Prestwood (6). This was followed by a fine 3-1 win over Sandhurst Devils in Reading Evening Post Senior Cup. However, the Satsumas were bought back to earth as ex Wokingham & Emmbrook man Kevin Prentice inspired local rivals Finchampstead to a 2-0 win over us on Easter Monday.

This Saturdays Reading Evening Post Senior Cup semi final agaisnt Sandhurst Devils is now being played at LOWTHER ROAD, Wolkingham with a 2pm kick-off. It will also be decided on the day, so there will be no replay.

                                                             Friday 3rd April 2009

Wayne Wanklyn says his young side must learn some valuable lessons from the last couple of months if they are to secure promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division next season.

It looked for long periods of this campaign that the Satsumas would surprise everyone and claim a top two spot which would have seen them promoted. But two defeats and a draw from their last five games has seen them drop off the pace at the top and Wanklyn has accepted that they will not be going up this season. He said: “Inconsistency has crept into our game in the last eight to 10 weeks and that’s what is going to cost us. But we’re young and we must learn from this. I’m very clear in thinking that, on our day, there is no better football side than us in the league."

“Though that’s not always enough, you need to know how to win when things aren’t going your way and that’s what we’re lacking. We have to learn how to win ugly and that to get out of this league you have to know how to mix things up.”

Despite ruling his side out of the promotion picture Wanklyn insists there is still a lot to play for. “We’ve got the likes of Ascot, Finch and Henley to play,” he said. “They are local derbies so the league positions are forgotten for those games. And the players are all playing for a place in the Reading Senior Cup semi-final on April 11. There is plenty to play for so they will all be motivated.”

This Saturday Wokingham head to South Kilburn looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a 2-0 defeat at Kintbury Rangers last weekend. But they will have to make do without key players such as Jake Broome, Alex Walton, Richard Bland and Tommy Chapman who are all out injured.

All four missed last weekend’s defeat at Kintbury which saw the hosts win 2-0 thanks to goals in either half from Shayne Small-King. Wanklyn said: “Saturday’s performance was the sort of display that has cost us promotion this season. It was difficult for both teams as the pitch was terrible, but that’s no excuse. We weren’t good enough. We lacked ideas up front and didn’t give their back four enough problems. If we want to achieve anything then we have to go to places like Kintbury and win. We didn’t do that and we need to learn from those types of games.”

The under eighteens traveled to Didcot Town last night (2/4) and came away with an impressive 1-0 win, in what was a thoroughly entertaining game. The young Satsumas dominated the first 35 minutes of the match, and but for some fine goal keeping and the woodwork could have found themselves three or four up before the break. However, Didcot came more into the game, and it looked like it was going to be one of these games, and we would roue the missed changes.

The second period was a much more even affair, with Wokingham carving out the better chances. Midway through the half Shane Cooper-Clark scored the only goal of the game from close range following good work from the impressive Ollie Cooper-Southward. Manager Roger Herridge was delighted afterwards saying, " next to Hayes and Yeading, Didcot are the best footballing side we have come up against this season, and I believe that would have been a joy to watch for the spectators. In a 1-0 win you think we would be full of praise for the back line. Although the played really well, I thought the front two (Ollie Cooper-Southward and Shane Cooper-Clark) showed what this team is all about, with fantastic work rate from both.

The Satsumas had a frustrating afternoon at Kintbury Rangers. Manager Wayne Wanklyn had to make four changes from the side that had beaten Binfield the previous week, with Jack Broom, Steve Tranter, Tom Chapman and Richard Bland all missing through injury.

There was no room for the free following football seen the week before on a pour uneven pitch, with an awful bounce and a strong wind blowing from goal to goal. These conditions seemed to benefit the home side who took the lead midway through the first half. However, Wokingham must have fancied their changes in the second period with the wind at their backs. Although dominating the most of the half, the vistors rarely threatened the home goal, and against the run of play Kintbury doubled their lead from a deflected free-kick with ten minutes remaining.

McClurg Left "Sick As A Parrot"

Steve McClurg admits he has been left as ‘sick as a parrot’ since his Binfield side’s 1-0 home defeat by Wokingham and Emmbrook last weekend.

The loss was the first the Moles have suffered in the league this season and crushed their dreams of going through the entire campaign unbeaten. It also ended their stunning 15 match winning streak in the league which stretched all the way back to August 25 when they drew 1-1 with Finchampstead.

A shell-shocked McClurg said: “Everyone was flat after the game, I’m as sick as a parrot to be honest. We didn’t want to lose a game this season, that was what we were aspiring to. So everyone was really flat after the game, everyone was sick because we knew we hadn’t performed like we can do. The record is gone now, we have to move on and start again. We’re still in a very good position.”

He added: “Winning is a habit and we need to make sure we start again quickly. When we’ve lost in the cups this season we’ve shown good bouncebackability and that’s what we have to do now. I’m sure Ascot will be delighted with what happened last weekend, but for us it’s not the end of the world. It was not a nice feeling at the end of last Saturday’s game but I’m hoping that now the players have experienced that, they won’t want it to happen again.”

McClurg has added former Bracknell Town winger Stuart Tanfield to his squad as he looks to add competition for places. The tricky left-sided player is close friends with a number of the current Moles squad so McClurg does not expect him to have any trouble settling in. “Stuart’s been training with us a couple of times,” he said. “He’s a good lad and has got an excellent left foot. He will fit in very well and will add competition. His arrival might upset a couple of players but you have to have a strong squad if you are to win anything.”

Binfield host Prestwood this Saturday and should have Adam Crittenden and James Partridge back available after the duo both missed out last weekend. Skipper Steve Nebbett is rated at 50/50 because of a rib injury and McClurg admits his side miss his presence when he’s not on the pitch. He said: “Steve gets stuck in, we miss his drive when he’s not playing. We miss his voice as well, he keeps everyone on their toes.”

                                                                            Monday 23rd March 2009

The Satsumas became the first team to beat local rivals Binfield in the league on Saturday (21/3). A late strike from Billy Elgar was enough to see the boys in orange come away with all three points. The victory was not enough for the Satsumas to retain the Martin Joyce Trophy, that went back to Binfield, who had a 4-3 aggregate win. The win was overshadowed by the sending off of Shane Wanklyn and Dave Fenton for a skirmish in front of the home duggout with just seconds remaining. Manager Wayne Wanklyn remained up-beat " It was a shame about the sending off's at the end but I have no problems with the outcome as both players threw punches and got what they deserved". " As for the game I thought we did excellently against a well organized side and defended well throughout". " There were not many chances for either side and I thought who ever scored first would probably win it ". " I thought Shaun had his best game for the club but that was spoilt by the sending off but overall it was an excellent team performance". For me Tommy Chapman worked his socks off in midfield but I do agree it was a great team effort.

Manager Roger Herridge saw goals from Charlie Oakley, Shane Cooper-Clark, Josh Smith and Jack Broom secure a place in the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup on Sunday (15/3). Herridge was full of praise for the boys afterwards " we thoroughly deserved the win, and the boys once again showed the quality within the club. It's a great achievment to reach the final of a County Cup, and I believe this is only the second time in the history of Wokingham that the town has been represented in the final.

The final takes place on Sunday 26th April, ko 11.00am at Abingdon United F.C. and all support will be welcome. Roger added, " We will be facing local rivals Bracknell Town in the final, so I'm sure there will be a bumper crowed on the day".

Division One East

In the division’s match of the day and in front of a bumper crowd, table toppers Ascot United were beaten by Binfield with the only goal of the game scored by Jamie McClurg after 5 minutes.

Bisley Sports entertained Thame United and were undone by an own goal and a second half James Way strike.

Englefield Green Rovers hosted Rayners Lane and grabbed all three points after scores from Paul Burrows, Ben Whatford anmd Shaun Stephens.  Chinnor’s five game winning streak became six after an early Stuart Braun strike at Finchampstead.

Henley Town overwhelmed lowly Prestwood with five goals from Paul Wylie, Dan Lingwood, John Donegan, Chris Bark and Kevin Paiser.

Wokingham & Emmbrook’s faltering title challenge continued away at Holyport when they could only manage a point after a 1-1 draw.  Richard Bland gave them a first half lead, but Jamie Handscomb replied mid-way through the second period to secure Holyport’s point.

Basement club, Launton Sports enjoyed a shock win over Kintbury Rangers following a thrilling 4-3 encounter.  Sports’ heroes were Gareth Price with a hat-trick and James Keeble and replying for the Rangers were Shaun Thorp with a brace and Chris Angell.

                                                                        Thursday 12th March 2009

Wokingham boss Wayne Wanklyn has admitted that his side's promotion dreams may now be over, admitting that his team’s promotion dreams look to have disappeared following a shock 2-1 home defeat against Chinnor last Saturday. The result leaves the Satsumas eight points adrift of league leaders Ascot and just one point above third-placed Binfield who have six games in hand. With just the top two gaining promotion, Wanklyn concedes it now looks unlikely that his team will be playing in the Hellenic Premier Division next season. He said: “We all know the score and I would say that at this moment in time it looks a done deal for Ascot and Binfield. But we’ll keep going, we certainly won’t make it easy for either of them. We’ve got to play both of them and they won’t be getting easy games. We have a slightly different agenda now. It’s about pride, self motivation and about showing that we want this football club to progress. We’ve still got a semi-final to play and I will be looking at how players respond during the next few weeks. We’ve still got a lot to play for.” He added: “I’ve been delighted with the players for most of the season. We’re a young side and to be in this position shows we’ve taken the club forward this season. But we can either go two ways now. We can let our chins hit the ground and go horribly wrong over the next four or five weeks. Or we can pick ourselves up and make sure we have the best finish possible. We don’t want to finish fourth or fifth, we want to make sure we’re third at least.” Wokingham will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Holyport on Saturday and Wanklyn has hinted he may make changes to ‘freshen’ things up. Billy Elgar is still unavailable for the weekend’s clash following a car accident a fortnight ago, but other than that Wanklyn has a full squad to choose from.

Report taken from the Hellenic League web site

Wokingham & Emmbrook took a depleted squad to Henley Town last night (11/3) in the Allied Counties Premier League. Manager Roger Herridge had four key players missing, however once again we showed we have strength in depth in our squad and produced a very good performance. Jack Broome (pictured left) and Shane Cooper-Clark gave the young Satsumas a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes. Henley reduced the deficit just before the break. The second half saw Wokingham dominate, but with chances being created and missed time after time, you felt it was only a matter of time before the home side would break away to level. In the 85th minute they did just that, with their wide man cutting in from the right, he somehow managed to deceive everyone and got a shot away using his right foot from twenty yards which looped over the stranded Woods in the Wokingham goal. Assistant manager Dan Bateman was full of praise for the lads at the end, stating " we created enough chances to have won three games tonight, we have played far worse than that this season and come away with all three points. The lads are gutted, it felt like a defeat sat in that changing room afterwards. It was just one of those games and the longer it went on the more you could see Henley snicking a goal. Although I do not like singling players out, I thought Mark O'Connell had a great game tonight standing in for Josh Smith in the heart of our defence, and Ollie Cooper-Southward kept going all night despite not having a lot of luck in front goal.

                                 Monday 9th March 2009

An individual goal from Sam Whiting midway through the first half was not enough to inspire the Satsumas, as they went down 2-1 at home to a well organised Chinnor side on Saturday (7/3).  Assistant boss Roger Herridge commented. " It was a disappointing performance that lacked guile at times, we just couldn't break them down ". " From the outset you could see that they had come for the point stringing five across the back, despite our possession at times we failed to create that many chances we were totally predictable". " Then we got caught by the sucker punch, we will have to learn from this and take it on board " This was Wokingham's first defeat in six games, although they still remain in 2nd place in the table, but Binfield who won at Thame Utd are now only a point behind them but with six games in hand. Realistically Wokingham are looking to secure third spot, which could still be good enough for promotion as the top three go up if ground requirements are meet.

                   ALLIED COUNTIES YOUTH LEAGUE

Tonights fixture at home to Northwood has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch

The team had to put in an extreme amount of effort as the side not only battled the opposition but also the elements last night (3/3). To say the weather was awful is a big understatement. During the game strong winds caused problems for any long balls played forward and heavy rain caused puddles to form making passing on parts of the pitch impossible. The only goal of the game came within the first 3 minutes as Richard Bland continued his excellent scoring form as he ran through Thameʼs backline before clinically finishing. Unfortunately the conditions soon diteriated making the game unable to produce much quality play. Nick Bateman came close as he saw a shot and free kick efforts both strike the woodwork. Thame piled the pressure on the away side in the second half as the sats had to make do with breaking on the counter attack. Easier said than done when the ball would'nt move in places. However, the team clung on to win a valuable 3 points and maintain the pressure on those around them.

                              Tuesday 3rd March 2009

A first half hatrick from Richard Bland and a David Bellis header put Wokingham & Emmbrook 4-0 up before the break in this one sided game against Launton Sports on Saturday (28/2). A further goal from Bland and one form Sam Whiting gave the Satsumas a convincing 6-0 victory. Manager Wayne Wanklyn looked far more at peace with the world after this impressive performance. " We went about our work in the right manner this afternoon, all be it against a poor side". " We looked comfortable throughout and kept a clean sheet, it was a good all-round performance with Blandy outsanting, not only scoring four but also assisting with the other two"

Manager Roger Herridge is hoping for a big crowd on Wednesday evening for our top of the table clash with Hayes & Yeading U18's in the Allied Counties Premier league. Roger said " It's been a great achievement by the boys so far, most of the teams in this division have senior sides playing at a higher level than ours, and at the beginning of the season survival was are main goal. It is amazing that we have set the pace right through the campaign, and a win on Wednesday night would take us a lot closer to the title. Although there is still a lot of football to be played. Roger has a full squad to choice from with Bellis and Walton returning from their holidays, and feels our boys could befit from a good crowd.          WOKINGHAM & EMMBROOK 4 - RAYNERS LANE 2

Wokingham & Emmbrook turned in one of their best performances of the season to complete the double over their Middlesex opponents and to keep in touch with leaders Ascot Utd who beat Eton Wick 3 - 1. Manager Wayne Wanklyn was forced to make changes with several players unavailable. Into the side came Andre Stairmand, Billy Elgar and Jack Broome. Two goals apiece from Richard Bland and Sam Whiting were enough to see the Satsumas home 4-2. Manager Wayne Wanklyn was more than satisfied with the overall performance although tongue in cheek he did say, " We do like to make thing interesting for ourselves giving away silly goals instead of killing sides off ". " Seriously I thought we played some great football especially in the first half, I thought both Bateman and Stairmand did well and Elgar did the simple things well and Bland's pace was always going to be a telling factor ". " It was also good to see Sam get back on the score sheet he needed those goals just to lift his confidence". " We were always a threat out in wide area's so overall I was pleased"

                                                                         Extended Season? - 12th February

Wokingham's Roger Herridge admits the constant weather disruptions could see the Hellenic League season extended.

With numerous games called off since the turn of the year due to rain, ice and snow some sides have been left facing some serious fixture congestion. With just over two months left of the season third placed Binfield still have a staggering 17 league fixtures to play.

Although Wokingham are not in as bad a situation having played six games more than their local rivals, Herridge still believes something might have to be done. He said: “We will probably have less problems than some of our rivals. Binfield, with their cup runs, are going to have a terrible run-in to the season. It’s very difficult at this level of football because a lot of teams don’t have floodlights. Binfield will be alright at home as they have them but they will have problems when they go away."

“The League has decided to cancel the Supplementary Cup which is very sensible of them because to be honest that cup is a bit of a pointless exercise. Maybe they will have to extend things, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s certainly been a frustrating time for everyone.”

The poor weather has even left the Satsumas unable to train during the past week and with last Saturday’s game with Wantage called off as well as Tuesday’s clash with Thame, Herridge admits they may be a bit rusty.

“Not being able to train has been frustrating,” he said. “Even our all weather surface at Cantley has been unusable. We’re hoping we will be able to train on Thursday though and everyone is keeping their fingers crossed that Saturday’s game gets the go-ahead. You can’t just presume the game is going to be off. You have to prepare like you would usually do so you’re in the right shape for kick-off.”

This Saturday Wokingham host strugglers Rayners Lane at Cantley Park and they have Nicky Bateman back after suspension. The Satsumas need three points to keep up with pacesetters Ascot United and Herridge is hoping for a repeat of the second day of the season when they beat the West Londoners. He said: “We came away from that game with a really good victory and that’s what we’ll be hoping for again".

                                                          Still Possible - 5th February

Wokingham assistant manager Roger Herridge says last weekend’s 5-1 success at Eton Wick shows the players still believe they can achieve promotion this season.

The second-placed Satsumas were rocked the previous weekend when they crashed to a 4-1 home defeat against league leaders Ascot United, a loss that saw them fall five points adrift of the pacesetters. And with Binfield just four points behind them, and with six games in hand, Wokingham know they are in a real fight for the top two finish they need to reach the Hellenic Premier Division.

However, Herridge, pictured, insists that the team are up for that fight. He said: “Everyone was really disappointed after the Ascot game, we’ve got aspirations of bigger and better things so that result came as a blow. But the boys have responded in a good way. They’ve worked hard in training and they certainly haven’t thrown in the towel. We’ve got three or four league games coming up now that we would expect to win. If we can do that then we will put ourselves in a strong position going into the final month. We’ve still got a great chance of getting out of this league this year.”

He added: “No disrespect to sides like Eton Wick but when we go to grounds like theirs we have to think 'do we want to play here next season?’ The boys know that if they get promoted they will be playing at better grounds with better facilities. That’s what they want to achieve.”

Wokingham host Premier Division side Wantage Town this Saturday in a Supplementary Cup match at Cantley Park. They will have to make do without the suspended James Wise and Nicky Bateman for the first round clash, but Herridge is confident the squad has enough quality to progress.

He added: “It’s a break from league action for the boys and a good chance to test themselves against Premier Division opposition again. It won’t be easy but we want to get some consistency back, winning becomes a habit and we need to get back to that.”

Report taken from the Hellenic League web site

Young Satsumas Achieving Early Success - 4th February

Whilst the Hellenic League Division One East first team have been taking plenty of plaudits this season, there is another side at Wokingham and Emmbrook Football Club who have been making their way impressively through the campaign.

The club’s Allied Counties (Under-18s) team have yet to taste defeat in the Premier League and sit eight points clear at the top of the table. It has been a remarkable campaign for the side who were only promoted to the top flight last season after they roared to the South Division title, winning all but one game.

Led by first team assistant manager Roger Herridge, they have won seven of their nine league games, drawing the other two, to open up a commanding gap on the likes of Hayes & Yeading and Didcot Town. Their form has surprised everyone, including their coach who saw this season as a time for consolidation after last year’s heroics.

Herridge said: “Our first aim this season was to make sure we stayed in the division after the success we had last year. With four of the 10 teams in the division getting relegated we were under a lot of pressure to perform straight away. We didn’t have the best pre-season either, we didn’t train together that much because of other commitments so we didn’t have the best preparation. But we’ve just got better and better as the season has gone on. We’ve got 23 points from a possible 27, it’s been a fantastic effort from the boys.”

He added: “They’re a great bunch and they’ve all got fantastic ability. They’re a pleasure to work with and every week we are getting to know each other better and better. There’s a real camaraderie within the squad now and they’re starting to believe in themselves. We’re at the halfway mark and there’s plenty of tough games ahead but the players think they’ve got a chance.”

Wokingham have been reaping the success of their Allied Counties outfit in the past few seasons with current first team players such as Sam Whiting, James Wise and Richard Bland all coming through the ranks at the club. A number of last season’s success stories have also made the step-up with David Bellis, Alex Walton, Jack Broome, Nick Bateman and Sean Wanklyn cementing their spots in the first team during this campaign.

Herridge said: “It’s a very good level of football. It gives the lads a great opportunity to play good quality sides, on decent pitches and under lights. The boys are very much part of the senior set-up, the same people that run the first team are always there watching the Allied Counties side. Wayne (Wanklyn) is always there, he knows the importance of the team and that many of the players are the future of the football club. If you look at the first team now you can see just how many of them have played at Allied Counties level, only a couple of them haven’t.”

He added: “The spine of our side this season is David Bellis, Alex Walton and Jack Broome and that is very strong. But some of the younger lads who have come in have also excelled, players like Shane Cooper-Clark and Jack Ingram have been superb. They look like being the next ones to step into the first team.”

Despite all the success that the Allied Counties side has enjoyed in the past couple of the seasons, there is still something that gripes at Herridge. Due to the lack of facilities, such as floodlit pitches around Wokingham, his team have had to play their games away from the town. Plans to develop Cantley Park have stalled due to funding issues with the FA and they don’t look like being resolved any time soon.

Herridge said: “The only disappointing thing is that for the last few years we’ve been playing our football outside of the district. We’re at Reading Town at the moment and before that we were at Bracknell. It’s a shame because we want to represent Wokingham in Wokingham. The lack of a decent football set-up in the district is embarrassing. We’re in an affluent area but from a sport point of view it’s second rate.”

                              Eaton Wick 1 Wokingham & Emmbrook 5

The Satsumas returned to winning ways with a convincing 5-1 win away to lowly Eaton wick. Richard Bland scored a fine second half hat-trick. Sam Duffelen opened the scoring after combing well with Sam Whiting. Shaun Wanklyn then doubled our lead from the penalty spot. Manager Wanklyn commented " I thought we were comfortable throughout the game, although our second half performance was certainly better than the first ". " We played some good football throughout with the midfield of Bellis, Elgar and Bateman outstanding, this is not a easy place to come and play with the wind howling and a bumpy surface, but we did well ".

Division One East

League leaders Ascot United stuffed South Kilburn 5-0. John Bennett grabbed a four-timer and Richard Mills completing the scoring in the last minute.

Strugglers Bisley Sports grabbed a welcome point from a 1-1 draw with Finchampstead.  James Mepham put Bisley into the lead after eight minutes but Aston Robinson replied almost immediately for the Finches.

Second placed Wokingham & Emmbrook visited second from bottom Eton Wick and duly won by 5-1 with strikes from Sam Duffelen and Shaun Wanklyn and a Richard Bland hat-trick.  Replying for the Wick was Lee Nevard.

In the mid table clash between Henley Town and Chinnor, Chinnor took the points with a solitary second half strike from Gary Marshall.

Englefield Green Rovers lost away to fellow strugglers Thame United by 3-1.  Thame’s sharp shooters were Stuart Barr with two and Mark James with Andy Murdoch replying for the Rovers.

The attendance of 148 in the top of the table clash with Ascot Utd was not only the highest in the Hellenic league on Saturday, it took our home support this season past the 1,000 mark. In 11 home games in the league, we have been watched by a total of 1,062 supporters, at an average of 96.5 per game. This support is not only welcomed by the players and management, but by the executive committee too, and it goes to show what this club can achieve given the right setting!! ALL WE NEED KNOW IS THE SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL COUNCIL TO HELP PUSH WAYNES BOYS TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

Naive defending and total lack of composure in front of goal cost Wokingham & Emmbrook dearly in last Saturdays top of the table clash at Cantley Park. Looking at the final score line you would think that the visitors had everything their own way, but in fact it was Wokingham who had the better chances over the 90 minutes. The difference between the two sides was that the visitors were more composed than the home side and more clinical in front of goal. A disappointed Wayne Wanklyn commented at the final whistle, " Ascot never had to work hard for their win, as our poor defending at set pieces gifted them the perfect start . Being 0-2 down after only 23 minutes meant we were always chasing the game ".

David Bellis has performed brilliantly for both the Wokingham & Emmbrook first team and the Allied Counties team this season.

Wokingham & Emmbrook FC's wonderkids are a team without a home

The future looks bright for Wokingham & Emmbrook Football Club as the club’s youth team (U18s) sits proudly at the top of the Allied Counties Premier League.

Playing against clubs of a far higher senior status, the team is currently eight-points clear at the top of the table having only gained promotion last season.

However, although the club’s first team moved to Cantley Park earlier in the season to play their home games, the Allied Counties team, because they play under floodlights during the week, have been unable to follow suit.

Instead, the team must travel to Reading Town’s home ground in Scours Lane, Tilehurst, for their ‘home’ games, meaning the area’s best young footballers don’t even have a ground to play at in their own town.

Manager Roger Herridge, who is also the first team assistant boss, has therefore called on the decision makers behind the club’s Cantley Park redevelopment project, which, among other things, would see floodlights erected around the first team pitch, to get behind the scheme and give the club’s youth team a home.

“We’re playing our football at Reading Town at the moment and we want to be at Cantley Park playing under floodlights at our own ground,” said Herridge.

“At the moment it feels like every game is an away game so when you take that into account, what the boys have done is even more impressive.

“It’s not ideal and it would be nice to play under floodlights at Cantley and be local enough that the boys’ mates, girlfriends, grandparents etc could come down and watch.

"If they were playing at Cantley, I know there would be lot of people come down to watch them.”

After opening the season with a draw against Bisley Sports the side has gone on to perform well above expectations.

The team is seen as an important stepping stone in the development of players from both within Wokingham & Emmbrook’s youth section and from other clubs around the area.

The majority of the current first team squad has progressed from the Allied Counties side, with three of the current Allied squad, David Bellis, Alex Walton and Jack Broome, regulars in the first team that are performing so well in the Hellenic League.

“We’re doing fantastically at the minute,” said Herridge.

“The team did so well last year and our first target was to make sure they stayed in the Premier because it’s a good level of youth football.

“When you play U18 football you’re never really sure what you’ll have to work with from one year to the next and last year we had the cream of the crop, but this year as well we have some really, really good players.

“When we looked at the squad at the start of the season we said we didn’t have a bad group of players and with those three (Walton, Bellis and Broome) in your team you always have a chance, but some of the other boys have really come of age.

“We want the best boys in our district who aren’t involved with academies to come and play for Wokingham & Emmbrook.

“Wayne (Wanklyn, first team manager) sees the Allied team as a very important part of the development and future success of the club.

“Some of the boys have been with the club since they were six, but others have played football with other local clubs.

“At the end of the day they come to us because they want to play at a better level.

“It’s a really, really important step in the development of the best players in the district.”

With the team’s place in the Premier Division almost secure for next season the Management team are already planning ahead.

Trials will be held in the spring for next season’s squad, although anyone who believes they have the talent to play in the team are welcome to contact the club.

Anyone who is interested in trialling should contact Roger Herridge on 07762 750374.

To be eligible players must not have reached the age of 18 before September 1, 2009, but will have obtained the age of 16 before August 31st 2010.

Wayne Wanklyn admits that defeat in this weekend’s top of the table clash against Ascot United would leave his side with a mountain to climb in the Division One East title race.

The Satsumas go into the match two points behind leaders Ascot, who have one game in hand on their Berkshire rivals. A defeat would leave them five points adrift of the Yellamen and with Binfield circling menacingly in the background, Wanklyn admits that might be too big a gap.

He said: “If Ascot were to pick up three points it would certainly put them in the driving seat. It would give them an advantage on us but it wouldn’t finish our season. There’s still a long way to go, both teams have very difficult games ahead of them so anything can happen during the next few months. It’s an important game, it’s another local derby and both teams will know it’s not going to be easy.”

Games between sides competing at the top of the table can often be a damp squib but Wanklyn doesn’t think that will be the case on Saturday. He added: “If you look at the stats of both sides they are both fairly evenly matched. I think we’re the top two scorers in the league and defensively there’s also not much in it. So looking at that it could end up being 7-7.”

Wokingham ended a run of three games without a win last weekend when they crushed Bisley Sports 4-1 and Wanklyn will be looking for a similar performance on Saturday. The Satsumas boss insists that on their day his side can beat anyone in the league but he knows Saturday will be one of their toughest tests. “I’m just looking for us to perform like I know we can do,” he said. “If we do that then we’ve got a great chance of winning the game. We know it’s going to be difficult as Ascot are a very good side. But we also know that if we perform like we know we can then we can beat anyone in this league.”

Over twenty boys and girls arrived at Lowther Road on Sunday morning for our first SOCCER FUN session since leaving Finchampstead Road. The kids really enjoyed the mornings fun, and the club hope as the weeks go on to attracted more young players. Youth Chairman Neil Van Dan Dungen said afterwards " Soccer fun under Roy Merryweather at Finchampstead Road was a huge success, with close on 100 kids turning up each morning and slowly being introduced to football and the great benefits of exercise. We hope to emulate that here and encourage the kids to enjoy football"

                                  19th January 2009

The Satsumas made hard work of their 4-1 win over Bisley Sports on Saturday (17/01). James Wise opened the scoring in a the first half of missed chances, that should have seen us kill the game off. The second half started in much the same vain, with chances being squandered. Then against the run of play Bisley leveled thought Paul Hibbert.

Tommy Chapman then showed the forwards how it should be done with well taken goal, before Wise added a third and his second of the game. Sam Duffelen completed the scoring with five minutes remaining.

Although pleased with the win Manager Wayne Wanklyn thought as many others did, his side made hard work of a game they should have won more convincingly. " I lost count of the number of one on ones we had with their keeper, against the top sides we have to start taking them or we will be punished". " Saying that we did play some good football at times and we could quite easily have reached double figures! " We can at least go into next weeks top of the table clash in good heart".

The future looks bright for Wokingham & Emmbrook Football club as the clubs youth team (Under 18s) currently sit proudly at the top of the Allied Counties Premier League.

Playing against clubs off a far higher senior status the team is currently 8 points clear at the top of the table having won seven and drawn two of the 9 league games that it has played since gaining promotion after comfortably winning the South Division last season.

After opening the season with a draw against Bisley Sports the side has gone on to perform well above expectations with there most satisfying victories coming against two highly fancied teams Sun Postal Sports (Watford) and Hayes & Yeading on there on turf.

The side is managed by 1st team Assistant Manager Roger Herridge who is assisted by Daniel Bateman and physio Mark Pugh. First team Manager Wayne Wanklyn is also a regular attendee at matches and he oversees the Allied set up which he sees has an important role in the future success of the club.

The side is seen as an important stepping stone in the development of players from both within Wokingham & Emmbrooks youth section and from other clubs around the area. The majority of the current first team squad has progressed on from the Allied Counties side over the last few years with three of the current Allied squad, David Bellis,Alex Walton and Jack Broome, regulars in the first team that are performing so well in the Hellenic League.

This years Allied squad not only has a number of players that joined the club as 7 year olds and have progressed through but also players that have joined the Allied set up after playing there boys football at a number of other local clubs including California Boys, Meadway, Dynamos, Camberley Town and Westwood Wanderers.

Home games are currently played at Reading Town FC but with the hopefull development of Wokinghams ground at Cantley Park just around the corner the club is hopeful that from next season the side will be playing its football under lights in Wokingham.

Wokingham and Emmbrook assistant Roger Herridge admits the club has been struggling to maintain the form it showed in the early part of the season.

The Satsumas have picked up just two points from their past three games and are enduring their first real wobble of the campaign.

But they are still just two points off league leaders Ascot United and Herridge is confident a return to form is just around the corner. He said: “All sides have a spell when things don’t go right for them. You want to be at the top of your game all of the time but that just doesn’t happen. Over the last two or three games we haven’t had the results we wanted but what’s important is that we now get back on track as quickly as possible. We’ve had a bit of a rest because of the weather and maybe that’s come at a good time. Now we just want to get going again.”

He added: “There’s still plenty of twists and turns ahead of us. You’ve got to say that Binfield are the favourites at the moment but there’s still a lot of points to win between now and the end of the season.”

Wokingham host Bisley Sports this Saturday and will have Richard Bland available again after his return from Camberley Town.

The Satsumas will be without David Bellis and Alex Walton, however, as the duo are playing in a national schools cup game.

Herridge said: “Bisley are a young side but we know they can play very well on their day. Binfield only beat them 1-0 a few weeks ago which shows they can compete against the top sides. It will be a difficult.”

Mid-Season Review

Premier Division

The weather has taken its toll once again, with all Premier League fixtures postponed due to frozen pitches.  Going into 2009, Hungerford Town are currently occupying the top spot by 11 points, but second placed Shortwood United have a substantial backlog of fixtures and have been in a rich vein of form, not losing in the league since 23 August!  The bookies’ favourite has to be Hungerford, but Shortwood are looking good for an outside bet.  Third placed Witney United are certainly not yet out of contention and Reading Town have mounted a solid challenge, winning 10 out of their last 12 league games.  At the other end, the relegation battle seems to be with Harrow Hill and Bicester Town who have only won three league games between them.  The season is still only half-way through of course and fortunes can change very rapidly, but with sides queuing up for promotion in Division One(West) and One(East), Harrow and Bicester will certainly be looking over their shoulders with trepidation.  Let’s hope next week-end proves a little more fruitful in the league campaign!

Promotion Applicants

Six Premier Division clubs have applied for promotion to the Southern or Isthmian League at Step FOUR and include the present top three Hungerford Town, Shortwood United and Witney United. Also applying are Almondsbury Town, Chalfont Wasps and Reading Town.

Division One West

With all fixtures cancelled due to the freezing conditions, Hardwicke AFC remain on top of the league table going into 2009, but Letcombe have a game in hand and are only one point behind.  At this stage in the season it looks very much like a two horse race for the title but Purton and Malmesbury Vics are not that far behind.  Wootton Bassett Town have had some great cup runs and although only 6th in the table, have six games in hand over the leaders.   Injuries and unavailability have a habit of wrecking chances in the run-in but I fancy Wootton Bassett Town as the dark horses in the challenge for the league title with proven match winners like Sean Terry and Paul Hunt in their squad and even if they don’t make it, they certainly will have a say in the final outcome!

Trowbridge Town, Cricklade Town, Pewsey Vale and Cirencester United are locked in battle to avoid the bottom spot this season, but with a goal difference of -54, Cirencester look favourite to receive this dubious accolade.  However at this point in the proceedings, fortunes can rapidly change!

Division One East

The inclement weather has also put paid to all the fixtures in Division One East and the race for the title will be a very interesting one.  At the moment, Ascot United are heading the rankings, but only five points separates them from the four sides directly below, namely Wokingham and Emmbrook, Binfield, Newbury and South Kilburn.  Binfield have yet to lose a league fixture this term and with only 9 goals against clearly have a formidable back line.  For this reason and taking into account their games in hand, Binfield are my favourites for the title at this stage.  At the basement end, Eton Wick and Launton Sports are fighting to avoid the dubious honour of the wooden spoon and with only one victory between them in 37 games this will prove to be an interesting contest!

Promotion to the Premier

Clubs that finish in the ‘Top THREE in One East and West will have the opportunity to take a place in the Premier Division but they will also need to comply with the criteria of FA Ground Grading

Due to Thame United having floodlights our game this Saturday is a 3pm kick-off, and not 2pm as stated earlier on this site. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

As predicted, there were some fresh faces at training last night. Allied Counties star Jack Broom was accompanied by former youth team player Adam Van Dun Dungen. However, the biggest surprise was the return of former front man Richard Bland. Blandy started the season with us before moving onto Camberley Town at the begin of October 2008. Assistant manager Roger Herridge said " This could be just the lift the lads need, Blandy was on fire before his move to Camberley and you always feel there's a goal or two in him every game. Jack Broom has been performing well at under 18's, and he is more than ready for the challenge of stepping up a level. In respect of Adam, he was one of our promising youth team players, playing alongside Nick Bateman and Shaun Wanklyn. We thought we would take a look at him over the next couple of weeks"

Following the two draws and a defeat in our last three games, manager Wayne Wanklyn will be looking to freshen up his squad as the Satsumas travel to Thame United this Saturday. Wayne told us "The Under 18's have been performing well in the Allied Counties League, and one or two of them are now looking to step up into the senior squad, it may be time to give them their chance"
