Wokingham & Emmbrook 4, Unity 0
Berks & Bucks Senior Cup
Saturday 7th November 2009
Wokingham & Emmbrook eased confidently into the next round of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup against Reading league side Unity at Lowther Road on Saturday. Throughout this encounter Wokingham always looked the likely winners with the visitors lacking a cutting edge up front. Some of their approach play was pleasing to the eye but once in the final third of the pitch they where rarely a threat. From the start they were put on the back foot, the first attack with Darren Thorne again employed up front got to the byline and his low cross was dealt with at the second attempt by Unity keeper Karamba. Good pressure from Richard Bland caused confusion in the Unity penalty area as the ball broke to Thorne his effort flashed inches over the bar. Both Thorne and Shaun Wanklyn headed over from Alex Luis free kicks curled in from the right. Unity's Edwards clear off the line from Bland as Wokingham upped the tempo. The visitors had a brief spell of pressure forcing three corners in quick succession after Wokingham stand in keeper Simon Harvey was forced to make a brilliant save from a Gibson header from close in, diving full length to his left to concede a corner. Surviving this Wokingham were soon pushing forward again. Bland hitting the side netting after cutting in from the right, while at the other end Leacock fired wide. A good move involving Jack Broome and Bland released Andre Stairmand but the wide player saw his effort held by Karamba. The visitors were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but Roberts under hit effort failed to trouble Harvey as he gathered with total ease. The deadlock was finally broken in the 39th minute. A Broome free kick was played deep into the Unity area, it wasn't dealt with and the ball ballooned up into the air and Jose Gomez at full stretch forced the ball over the line. In desperation Unity's Roberts tried his luck from 30 yards out but Harvey had it covered as the ball went wide of the target. The second half started with Thorne again heading high of the target from a Luis free kick. Luis again crossed and this time Gomez's at full stretch couldn't take advantage. The lead was doubled in the 57th minute, Andre Stairmand finishing in style after the move of the match involving Thorne, Luis, and Bland opened up the visitors down the left, Luis involved twice in the move fed the ball into the path of Stairmand who drilled the ball home from 12 yards. Not satisfied Wokingham poured forward and Bland crossed into the six yard box with nobody to take advantage. Wokingham were then awarded a penalty on the hour mark when Alex Luis was floored in the area. After the visitors stopped there complaining to Referee Mr K. Brown, Shaun Wanklyn stepped forward to fire home from the spot. Boss Wanklyn then made a couple of changes introducing Chris Byrne and Shane Cooper - Clarke for Richard Pilcher, who had a fine game and Darren Thorne. The visitors had a goal disallowed in the 68th minute after Harvey had parried an effort out into the path of Massaqui, but the striker was in an offside position. Luke Lee replaced the limping Steve Tranter in the 77th minute. The final goal of the game came five minutes from time when Wokingham were awarded a free kick on the left. Broome crossed perfectly into the path of the incoming Stairmand who took the ball in his stride before firing powerfully home giving rooted keeper Karamba no chance at all. Had their discipline matched some of their approach play the visitors might have given Wokingham a far harder time. It wasn't their challenges that caused problems, but their challenging of nearly every decision made against them by Referee Mr . K Brown, who I thought had a good game.
Manager Wayne Wanklyn pleased with another clean sheet commented. " Again it was job done ". " At half time I said to the lads if you get a second early on we would go on and win three of four nil, this we did ". " We now go into next weeks crucial league encounter at Holyport in confident and buoyant mood, Having scored 19 goals in our last 5 games and conceded only 2 ". I can only echo his thoughts.
